UK Citizens Travelling to Schengen Europe: Visa Rules After Brexit
UK citizens can enter the Schengen Area visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This applies to all 29 Schengen countries including France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece, Portugal, and the Netherlands.
The 90/180 Day Rule Explained
The Schengen visa-free allowance is a rolling window. At any point in time, count how many days you have spent in Schengen countries over the last 180 days. If that number reaches 90, you must leave and cannot return until the count drops below 90.
ETIAS — Coming Late 2026
The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will require UK citizens to obtain an online authorisation before travel. It costs EUR 7, is valid for 3 years, and takes minutes to approve. This is not a visa — it is a pre-travel screening similar to the US ESTA.
What You Need at the Border
A passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date and issued within the last 10 years. Border officers may also ask for proof of accommodation, return tickets, and travel insurance.
